Editorial: is laughing a reasonable strategy to survive difficult times?

It's a simple question: which personal coping strategy is best to adopt when the going really gets rough in your life?

Day-dreaming took over my brain not that long ago and somehow led me to remember the life of my maternal grand-father, a small French farmer who spent 5 years as a prisoner of war in WWII Germany working in the fields that fed the inmates and guards of the infamous Dachau concentration camp, lost 5 of his 7 children to illnesses and lived a life plagued by constant financial challenges and other personal hardships.

I will honestly confess that I never knew my grand-father well as he didn't talk much and never talked about himself at all. My mother filled the gaps years after he died. Yet I do remember his laughter and the joy he expressed when he played with us kids.

What I learned from him in a non-verbal way is profound. That man survived Hell and learned the hard way to take everything one day at a time and leave tomorrow where it belongs: in a space that has not yet and may never manifest. Coming from a world of intense pain where few survived never stopped him from enjoying the simple pleasures of life and be at peace in the present moment. "Now" was his one and only treasure and he wasn't going to let fear about hypothetical futures waste it.

I'd humbly suggest you consider doing the same if you, too, are facing intense challenges. Practice laughter yoga whenever you need to feel good, keep asking yourself one simple question "what can I do, now?" and just do it. Tears, anger, depression and all other negative feelings rob you of your power and lead to inaction.

Laughter is the cry of the warrior. Join the laughter team and keep doing your best in your life with a smile on your lips!

I will.

May you thrive and experience a meaningful and heartfelt holiday season!

2009 Laughter Yoga Calendar Of Events: Are You Ready For this?

  • The Kripalu Center For Yoga & Health (America's largest and most prestigious yoga training facility) has booked us again to lead a workshop on July 2-5 (more on this soon), thereby confirming the official acceptance of Laughter Yoga in the "official" Yoga world.
  • We are working to gain CE credits approval for our training with several boards in several states (starting with California and Illinois).
  • It was all in English before, and you can now train in Spanish too! We will offer our first Certified Laughter Yoga Leader training in English and Spanish in Miami in January (see below). Also check our expanded webpages in Spanish.

Certified Laughter Yoga Leader Training with Sebastien Gendry:

NEW! 1/2 day to learn Laughter Yoga for Seniors

"Just wanted to send you a quick note to tell you how much I enjoyed the laughter session this past weekend. When I went home yesterday I was happy, relaxed and didn't have a care in the world. I don't remember the last time I felt like that."

Get Exposure! Case Study: Join the Doo Dah Parade in Pasadena, CA, on Sunday Jan. 18

These are challenging times. Granted. It's also a great opportunity for you to share a message of hope instead of doom and gloom in your community. How? Contact your local media and tell them (again) about your laughter club if you have one. Participate and laugh in local events. For those of you in Southern California it could be joining the Pasadena Doo Dah Parade on Sunday January 18. A group of us will march under the banner of "American Laughter Clubs" and all are welcome to march with us (think of it as lots of fun with 40,000 people!) Email us at laugh@laughangeles.com for more information.

Get together! Case Study: First Southern California Laughter Yoga get-together in Laguna Beach on Jan. 31.

There are huge values to be gained in networking and sharing ideas with others, in the Laughter Yoga world just as in any other field of activities. We strongly recommend that you keep in touch and/or meet once in a while with other people active or interested in Laughter Yoga in your community.

There again Southern California leads the way and the first quarterly Socal Laughter Yoga get-together will take place in Laguna Beach on Jan. 31. This is free and open to all Certified Laughter Yoga Leaders and Teachers. A shuttle service (rides in private cars) will be offered at certain specific hours, based on train arrivals, from the Irvine Train Station (if desired). It is a 20 minute drive to/from the train station. We will meet as a group in Laguna Beach 1:30-4:00pm, either indoors or in a park if it a lovely day; All can attend the Laguna Laughter Club session on the beach (4:30 – 5:15pm). Chances are good we will have a beautiful sunset by the sea! For more information please contact Jeffrey Briar.

New Laughter Clubs and Laughter Yoga people directory on www.laughangeles.com

This is a work in progress, and we are slowly building our USA database of Laughter Clubs and Laughter Yoga people. Listing in both these directories is free (don't wait for us!). What is unique about them is that your address / city is linked to an interactive google map. That way people can see exactly where you are. Very cool.
