Public Speaking

How to find local speaking gigs
Explore www.eventbrite.com and look at all the upcoming events in your preferred category. The next step is to contact the event host and offer him/her/them your services.

Room set-up tip
When working in a room with flexible seating, ask the organizers to set out about 10% fewer chairs than registrants, but to store the extra chairs nearby. The result? If not everyone shows up, you still have a tightly packed audience and no empty chairs. If everyone does show up, it looks good that they’re having to bring in extra chairs.

Good Business Practices

Year-end accounting check-up
Invest in an hour or two with your accountant before the end of the year. To be fiscally responsible and to have a prosperous business, you have to have strong relationships with your accountant. The time you spend educating your accountant about your business is well-spent. They will be eager to ensure you keep your money legally.

Read Consumer Reports before buying anything
http://www.consumersunion.org/ is a quality, unbiased resource for finding the best, also the “best buys.” They thoroughly test every product and rate it in several categories depending on the product. They do not permit advertisements in their magazine so are free of conflict of interest. They also have an online resource, although I still subscribe to the magazine. I save them for five years and the April auto issue forever, since we usually buy used cars.

Technology Corner

Squeeze/sales page resource
Have you ever wanted to know how all these Internet marketers put together squeeze pages and sales pages so quickly and easily? See salespagetemplates.net and for $9 you, too, can put together a quick and easy sales or squeeze page.
.
Emergency tire fix
Even if you have AAA or other travel club membership, you may find yourself in an area with no cell towers or just in a place where you do not want to wait. Stop by one of the automotive parts stores and purchase an aerosol can of tire inflator, to instantly fix the flat and get you back on the road. Do be sure to read the can information thoroughly before use, and have the tire checked out professionally at your first opportunity.

Directory printing tip

Sometimes I need to print a list of files in a directory or folder. For several years I’ve been doing it the hard way with unsortable screen prints! Then I remembered the old fashioned DOS commands I used to use. I had to re-learn some of them from the internet as it has been many years since I used DOS.

  • To access the DOS-type screen on most Windows PCs, click on Start then Run. Type cmd and click OK.
  • Type cd (change directory) and then the name of the directory until you get to the folder you want to print. For example, cd.. takes you back a directory until you get to the c: prompt. Then you might type cd my documents.
  • dir > print.txt
  • The above command will take the list of all the files and all of the information about the files, including size, modified date, etc., and send that output to the print.txt file .
  • dir /b > print.txt
  • This command would print only the file names and not the file information of the files in the current directory.

Crash Course in Facebook Marketing + FBML

This may be a little too technical for some of you, and if you understand the basics of html the following may prove very useful. Here is a brief context on how this list came to be: I wanted to create a landing page on our Facebook business page with a promotional code that only people who “liked” us could see.

Here is the code I eventually used & that worked (see www.facebook.com/laughteryogaamerica)

Technology in service of fun & mankind: 3 websites you would not want to miss

Well, it’s like this: I was surfing the web tonight as I occasionally do, looking to update my knowledge of what’s new & interesting.

What I found is guaranteed to make you smile, want to share your new discovery with lots of people, and make you a better person overall (I know, that’s quite a claim and prove me wrong).

Here it is:

  1. http://bodybrowser.googlelabs.com. Amazing doesn’t really begin to describe this most impressive dynamic map of the human body. You may have to download the latest version of Chrome and it is well worth it.
  2. http://www.chromeexperiments.com. If Google can create the “body browser” mentioned above, I figured there was much more they were also doing. This site has over 100 most amazing applications that will spark your creativity and keep you entertained forever. My personal favorite tonight was http://mrdoob.com/projects/harmony/
  3. http://www.paulsadowski.com/birthday.asp. This one came out of the left field and is undoubtedly one of my top 10 best finds this year. One link led to another to another and then to this one. Enter your birthday and it will tell you gazillions of facts about you, some more or less useless (how many seconds you have lived so far, your lucky day, number, tree, flower, stone…) and others very insightful such as a link to your full numerological profile (mine was spot on).

Enjoy!

How do you deal with people who are skeptic about laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga professionals all have had to deal at some point with people so stuck in their head that they just didn’t want to laugh. It’s unavoidable. In the workplace it’s usually because the boss had a great idea and forced his/her employees to attend a “surprise” workshop and they have no idea about what it is about. In public sessions it’s usually because someone forced someone else to come along because they thought it would be good for them.

Whatever the reason some people come and then get stuck in the conviction that Laughter Yoga is idiotic, stupid, insane, pointless, childish, of bad taste, etc. and they don’t want to have anything to do with it.

How will you make them laugh?

I have faced this situation myself many times. The process I use in those instances is fool-proof and  has never failed me. You can master it too with practice. Here it is in a nutshell:

Nic Marks: The Happy Planet Index

Statistician Nic Marks asks why we measure a nation’s success by its productivity — instead of by the happiness and well-being of its people. He introduces the Happy Planet Index, which tracks national well-being against resource use (because a happy life doesn’t have to cost the earth). Which countries rank highest in the HPI? You might be surprised.
