Laughter Yoga did not appear in a vacuum. It followed decades of ground work done by many great people around the world - some famous and others not - who helped raise mass consciousness about the preventive and therapeutic benefits of laughter.
Laughter yoga or laughter therapy promises to relieve stress and strengthen the immune system. Dozens of instructors from as far away as Zimbabwe and Venezuela recently gathered for a training session in Rosemont with Madan Kataria, an Indian doctor widely credited with starting laughter yoga in 1995.
Dr Topher Stephenson, who specializes in physical medicine and runs the spine program at Mercy in Sacramento, says laughter yoga promises to do for the psyche what bikram yoga does for muscles.
